Pro+ Pergola — Why Is My Pergola Swaying? Causes & How to Fix It

If your Hansø Pro+ Pergola moves or wobbles in the wind, here’s what’s normal, what’s not, and how to properly reinforce your installation for maximum stability.

Updated this week

🌬️ Overview

Some movement is normal during strong wind gusts — especially for lightweight aluminum pergolas.
However, excessive swaying or noticeable movement during mild conditions can indicate an anchoring or connection issue that needs attention.

This guide explains common causes of pergola sway and how to fix each one.

Is Some Movement Normal?

Yes.
Aluminum pergolas like the Pro+ are engineered for strength yet remain lighter than wood or steel structures.
Minor movement or vibration during strong winds is expected and safe.

However, if your pergola:

  • Wobbles during light winds, or

  • Feels unstable when touched,

…it likely needs reinforcement or anchoring adjustments.

🔍 Common Causes of Swaying

1. Pergola Not Anchored Securely

If the baseplates are not fully anchored into a solid surface (like concrete), the pergola may flex or shift slightly with wind force.

Fix:

  • Verify that each post baseplate is secured using the correct M10x100 expansion bolts.

  • Bolts should go into concrete or a stable structural base, not only into thin decking material.

  • Retighten all baseplate bolts if any feel loose.

💡 Tip: If expansion bolts cannot be used, refer to the Pro+ Pergola Baseplate Bolt Alternatives guide for approved anchor options.

2. Mounted on Wood Decking or Pavers

Wood decks and paver surfaces can move or flex under wind load, especially if the pergola is only surface-mounted.

Fix:

  • On wood decking:

    • Add extra blocking or joists underneath the baseplate area for better load transfer.

    • Consider using lag bolts that reach deep into structural framing.

  • On pavers or tiles:

    • Reinforce posts by anchoring through to the concrete slab below, or

    • Install concrete footings under each post for long-term stability.

3. Missing or Loose Bolts

Even a single loose or missing bolt in the frame or beam connections can cause visible sway over time.

Fix:

  • Inspect all frame joints and corner connections.

  • Tighten any loose hardware and replace missing bolts immediately.

  • Apply thread-locker on frequently loosening bolts to prevent vibration-related loosening.

⚙️ When to Contact Support

If your pergola continues to sway after confirming all anchors and bolts are properly secured, contact Hansø Support with:

  • Photos or video showing the swaying motion

  • Details about your installation surface (concrete, deck, pavers, etc.)

  • Confirmation of anchor type and placement

Our team can provide engineering-based recommendations or review if your structure requires additional stabilization measures.
