Concrete Footers & Surface Preparation

Understand when concrete footers are needed and how to prepare your surface for a secure Hanso Pergola installation.

Updated over a week ago

Overview

Your pergola’s foundation is the key to its long-term strength and performance. Whether you’re installing on concrete, decking, or pavers — proper preparation ensures stability, drainage, and warranty compliance.

🧱 When Concrete Footers Are Needed

You’ll need concrete footers if:

  • You’re installing on pavers, soil, or gravel (no solid base underneath).

  • Your surface is uneven or sloped, making direct anchoring unsafe.

  • The site requires frost-depth compliance in colder regions.

Typical size:
Each footer should measure roughly 12"–18" wide and 18"–24" deep, depending on local soil and code requirements.

⚙️ Who Installs Footers

  • DIY Installation: You can hire a local contractor or handyman to pour concrete footers before assembly.

  • White-Glove Service: Many Hanso partner installers can quote this as an optional add-on if the surface is not ready.

🧭 Surface Preparation Guidelines

Before installation, make sure your area is:

  • Level: Within ±5mm (¼ inch) variation across the pergola footprint.

  • Stable: No loose tiles, shifting pavers, or soft soil.

  • Clean: Free from debris, furniture, or previous fixtures.

  • Accessible: Minimum 3 ft (1 m) clearance around the installation zone.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mounting directly to pavers without footers or adhesive anchors.

  • Installing over composite decking without checking subframe strength.

  • Skipping drainage planning (especially in areas with heavy rain).

Hanso Installer Tip

If unsure, send photos of your site to our team. We’ll confirm if your surface meets Hanso’s Foundation & Mounting Requirements before installation.
