Pro+ Sunshade — How to Check and Adjust Screen Tension

Troubleshoot a manual Pro+ sunshade that retracts slowly, stops short, snaps up, or is difficult to pull down, with the screen-tension video guide.

This guide applies to Hanso Pro+ manual retractable sunshades, including shades installed on a motorized Pro+ pergola. Use the Pro+ instructions for your shade; this procedure does not apply to motorized Apex or Horizon shades.

When should screen tension be checked?

Screen tension controls how the spring-loaded roller retracts the fabric. It may need adjustment if the shade retracts weakly or stops before reaching the top cassette, snaps upward too quickly, or becomes unusually difficult to pull down.

These symptoms can also result from track obstruction or misalignment. A shade that will not stay in the expected position needs assessment before assuming tension is the cause. If its bottom lock does not engage, photograph the lock and rail for Support.

1. Rule out binding before adjusting tension

  • Operate from the center of the bottom bar and check that the bar remains level.

  • Check accessible guide tracks for debris and confirm that the fabric edges remain seated.

  • Have your installer check that the opening is square, the posts are plumb, and the cassette and tracks are level and aligned as required by the installation manual.

If the fabric bunches, leaves the track, or the bar tilts or jams, stop operating the shade. Adjusting spring tension will not correct a detached rail, damaged fabric, or an opening that is out of square.

2. Prepare the assembly for adjustment

The roller contains a pre-loaded spring. The Pro+ guide recommends removing the cassette and side rails together and supporting the assembly on a stable, flat surface before adjusting tension. Adjustment while mounted is not recommended because access is limited and the spring mechanism can move unexpectedly.

Follow the Pro+ removal and installation instructions. If you are unsure how to remove or support the assembly or control the spring mechanism, contact Hanso Support or your installer before proceeding.

Video: How to Adjust Screen Tension

Watch the complete Pro+ video before making an adjustment. Use the mechanism and handling method shown for your shade.

3. Adjust gradually and test after each change

  1. With the assembly securely supported, locate the tension adjustment mechanism at the end of the roller as shown in the video.

  2. Make a small adjustment using the method shown. Avoid making several large changes without testing.

  3. If retraction is weak or stops short, increase tension gradually. If the shade snaps up or becomes difficult to pull down, reduce tension gradually.

  4. Test a short section of travel after each change, keeping control of the bottom bar. The shade should retract smoothly toward the cassette without snapping or binding.

  5. Once operation is smooth, reinstall according to the Pro+ installation guide and check that the cassette and rails are square and secure. Test again after installation.

If the adjustment mechanism differs from the video, stop and send Support a photo before continuing. Do not force an adjuster or keep adding tension to overcome a jam.

4. Contact Support if the adjustment does not resolve the issue

Stop and contact Hanso Support if the shade still fails to retract, will not remain in the expected position, loses tension again, or continues to bind after the checks above. Further assessment may be needed to identify alignment, spring, locking, or component problems.

Please include:

  • Your order number, Pro+ sunshade size, and whether one or several shades are affected.

  • A description of the behavior: weak retraction, stopping short, snapping up, excessive pull resistance, or failure to hold position.

  • Photos of the full shade, both guide tracks, and any visible damage or locking issue.

  • A short video only if you can demonstrate the issue without forcing the shade.

  • The adjustments already attempted and whether the behavior changed before and after reinstalling.
