Proper silicone application is essential to prevent water from entering through pergola beam and gutter connections. Use this guide during installation to confirm every required joint is sealed continuously and correctly.
Where silicone sealant is required
Along the full gutter-to-beam joint around the pergola perimeter.
Along both sides of the center beam.
Through the middle gutter corner sections and center connection.
Along the inside seams of both side gutters.
At every corner, beam intersection, overlap, bracket, and connection-plate transition.
Important: Do not stop the sealant bead at the center connection. The bead must continue through the middle corner joints and into the adjoining side-gutter seams.
Proper application
Prepare the surface. Clean and completely dry all joint surfaces before applying sealant.
Apply a continuous bead. Use exterior-grade silicone approved for the pergola finish and local conditions. Do not leave gaps.
Press and smooth the sealant into the joint. Using a gloved finger or sealant-finishing tool, press the silicone firmly into the corner so it fills the joint and contacts both adjoining surfaces.
Do not leave the bead sitting only on top of the seam. The silicone must be worked into the joint to eliminate voids and create a watertight bond.
Inspect the full run. Check all corners, center connections, brackets, and side-gutter seams for gaps, pinholes, or missed sections.
Allow proper curing. Follow the sealant manufacturer’s preparation, safety, and curing instructions before exposing the pergola to water.
Final inspection checklist
All gutter-to-beam joints have a continuous sealant bead.
Both sides of the center beam are sealed.
Center gutter corner transitions are completely filled.
Side-gutter inside seams are sealed without interruption.
The silicone has been pressed into the joints and smoothed.
No gaps, voids, pinholes, or unbonded raised sections remain.
